A slave, Hagar could not choose to stay.
Her mistress took her from her tribe and land.
The patriarch-to-be lost faith in promises,
Using Hagar as if to force the Father's hand.
When Hagar saw that she would bear his child,
She looked upon her mistress with disdain.
The jealous woman repaid her in kind,
And desp’rate, Hagar ran away.
The sun beat down,
The sand burned her feet.
She paused at a spring,
To cool from the heat.
In a wilderness,
She sat alone, alone.

The angel of God said,
“Hagar, Hagar.
Why are you here?”
“I run from my mistress
In anger and fear.”
“Return to her.
Submit to her hand.
Find comfort, oh daughter.
God has a plan.
To make your son a nation.”
Find comfort. God has a plan, son a nation.
She rose from the spring,
Crying, “You are the God who sees me.
I have now seen who sees me.”
And she named the spring Beer Lahai Roi,
Well of the Living One who sees me.
I'm seen. I'm known. I'm never alone.
