Story Behind the Song

Thomas Kelly, an Irish evangelical clergyman and prolific hymn writer, wrote this Ascension and exaltation hymn in the early nineteenth century. It was published in his collection Hymns on Various Passages of Scripture and centers on the risen Christ, once mocked with a crown of thorns, now crowned in heavenly triumph. The tune CORONAE by William Henry Monk later became one of the standard tunes associated with the text.
