Story Behind the Song

“Soon Ah Will Be Done” is a traditional African American spiritual from the oral tradition, expressing hope for deliverance from suffering and for eternal life with God. Its text reflects the spirituals’ characteristic mixture of lament, endurance, and eschatological hope. The best-known concert version is William L. Dawson’s choral arrangement, which helped establish the song in the twentieth-century concert spiritual repertoire.
