Bible Verses About The Holy Spirit And The Church

Early Christian writers taught that the Holy Spirit truly works in the Church, gives life, teaches believers, and is received in baptism and the laying on of hands. Writers like Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, Hippolytus, and the Apostolic Constitutions connect the Spirit with Church unity, forgiveness, prophecy, and holy living. The evidence is broad and early, with strong overlap between second- and third-century authors and key Bible passages like Acts 2, Acts 15, John 14, and 1 Corinthians 3.

Some passages are about the Spirit’s work in the Church more than a full doctrine of the Spirit’s person, so the teaching is strong but not always equally direct on every point. A few liturgical texts also show that early worship called on the Holy Spirit for the Church’s life and sanctification.
