Bible Verses About Immersion And Pouring

The early Christian writings favor baptism by immersion, but they also allow pouring in cases where immersion is not possible. The Didache gives the clearest early rule: baptize in living water if you can, use other water if needed, and if neither is available, pour water on the head three times. By the third century, writers like Cyprian and the Apostolic Constitutions still treat immersion as the normal form while also speaking of water poured on a sickbed as a true baptism and warning against rebaptism.

Bible passages such as Jesus’ baptism, John’s baptizing where there was much water, and the burial-and-rising image in Romans 6 fit the same pattern, though some texts are indirect or used mainly as background.
