Bible Verses About Absolution And Forgiveness Of Sins

Early Christian writers widely taught that forgiveness of sins comes through Jesus Christ, is tied to repentance and baptism, and must be met with a forgiving heart toward others. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Hermas, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Cyprian, Origen, and the liturgical texts all connect remission of sins to Christ’s work, baptism, confession, prayer, and the Church’s ministry.

The evidence is strongest for baptism and repentance as the normal setting for forgiveness, and also for the idea that bishops or apostles could speak with binding and loosing authority. Some writers go further than others on penance and post-baptismal sin, so the details are mixed, but the main teaching is broad and early.
