And they departed with much wealth to their houses, and they divided the spoil of their enemies with their brethren; very much cattle, and silver, and gold, and iron, and much raiment.

And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thy heart, and thou hast not asked great wealth, nor glory, nor the life of thine enemies, and thou hast not asked long life; but hast asked for thyself wisdom and understanding, that thou mightest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:

I give thee this wisdom and understanding; and I will give thee wealth, and riches, and glory, so that there shall not have been any like thee among the kings before thee, neither shall there be such after thee.

They too that trust in cities and riches Shall come to shame.

All these things shall the righteous gain, And the truehearted shall possess his wealth.

Children’s children are the crown of old men; And their fathers are the glory of children. But the faithless not even a farthing.

And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

at which time Simon rose up, and fought for his nation, and spent much of his own substance, and armed the valiant men of his nation, and gave them wages,

For Antiochus, as though he would marry her, came into the place, and his friends that were with him, to receive money in name of a dowry.

and told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money, so that the multitude of their riches, which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices, was innumerable, and that it was possible to bring all into the king’s hand.

Now when Apollonius came to the king, and had shown him of the money whereof he was told, the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer, and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money.

This Simon now, of whom we spoke afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he had terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils.

Apollonius, acquainting himself with the particulars of this, praised Simon for his care of the king’s interests, and going up to Seleucus informed him of the treasure;

he said that he came with the commands of the king that he should take the private money of the treasury.

and Apollonius going up with his armed force to the seizure of the treasure—there appeared from heaven angels riding on horseback, all radiant in armor, filling them with much fear and trembling.

Set not thy heart upon thy goods; And say not, I have enough for my life.

Set not thy heart upon goods unjustly gotten; For they shall not profit thee in the day of calamity.

Because of unrighteous dealings, injuries, and riches gotten by deceit, The kingdom is translated from one people to another.

Riches are not comely for a niggard: And what should an envious man do with money?

He that is evil to himself, to whom will he be good? He shall not take pleasure in his goods.

He that buildeth his house with other men’s money Is like one that gathereth himself stones for the tomb of his burial.

Till he hath received, he will kiss a man’s hand; And for his neighbor’s money he will speak submissively: But when he should repay, he will prolong the time, And return words of grief, And complain of the time.

If he prevail, he shall hardly receive the half, And he will count as if he had found it: If not, he hath deprived him of his money, And he hath gotten him an enemy without cause: He payeth him with cursings and railings; And for honor he will pay him disgrace.

And before his long sleep he made protestation in the sight of the Lord and his anointed, I have not taken any man’s goods, so much as a shoe: And no man did accuse him.
