Question 2
In Matthew 7:7–11, Jesus portrays the Father as eager to give “good things” to those who ask; how do you reconcile that generosity with Bercot’s claim that “God hears the prayers of the righteous, but He turns away from the wicked,” and what does that reveal about God’s character and priorities?
Another way to ask: Jesus says the Father loves to give good things to people who ask. How do you fit that with the idea that God listens to the righteous but turns away from the wicked, and what does that show about what God cares about most?

Direct Answer The transcript holds both truths together by saying God is genuinely generous and ready to give, but He listens in a special way to those who are living righteously—so His generosity is not meant to be used to support a life of continued evil.

Support from Transcript:

  • Jesus’ invitation is broad and warm: “Ask… Seek… Knock… how much more will your Father… give good things to those who ask Him?”
  • Yet Bercot observes many don’t receive what they expect: “Millions… pray… But many… never receive… because they don’t meet the second condition.”
  • He ties answered prayer to obedience: “If you love me, keep my commandments…” and “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love.”
  • He appeals to James: “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much… [an] unrighteous man… avails little.”
  • He quotes Peter’s contrast: “His ears are open to their prayers… [but] the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
Discussion Follow-ups What “good things” might God be eager to give that actually require repentance and obedience in order to be safely received?
