Are Generational Curses Biblical or Part of the Historic Faith?

The Historic Faith The Historic Faith

Lesson Transcript

Morning, we're going to be talking about the subject of generational curses. One of our listeners sent in the question, "What do the early Christians have, if anything, to say about generational curses?" In my church, almost weekly, I hear that most people should be breaking generational curses by faith. This is a question I get asked a lot. Yeah, I'm glad it was presented, and I'm happy to talk about it briefly.

Let's maybe just begin, for readers who aren't familiar with it, what is the doctrine of generational curses? And this is just a really brief epitome. It's the idea that sin from a prior generation can be carried on as a curse on successive generations. In other words, your ancestors were involved in some kind of sin or iniquity, and now you have a curse on you, you and all the generations back to this ancestor. And it requires repentance at the present time.

In other words, the present generation has to repent for the sins of their ancestors. And it requires deliverance from or release from this quote "generational curse." Now, according to some proponents of this doctrine, a cleansing of the bloodline is needed in order to bring about a release from the curse. Well, I think our starting point should be, we're going to get to the early Christians, but it's the New Testament. I mean, that's always the starting point. So what does the New Testament say about this?

Is the doctrine of generational curses taught anywhere in the New Testament? No. I mean, the term doesn't even appear in the New Testament or even in the Old. So to me, end of discussion. It's not a New Testament doctrine, therefore it's a false doctrine. Any Christian teaching that's not in the New Testament is a false doctrine. In fact, like I say, the term generational curses doesn't even appear in the Bible at all. The book of Hebrews warns us, "Do not be carried away with various."
