Away in a Manger

Words by Anonymous (stanzas 1-2); John T. McFarland (stanza 3, attributed)Music by James R. Murray (MUELLER); William J. Kirkpatrick (CRADLE SONG)Written Tune MUELLER; CRADLE SONG

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head;
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

Story Behind the Song

“Away in a Manger” first appeared in the late nineteenth century in American Lutheran and Sunday-school sources and was long, but incorrectly, attributed to Martin Luther. The first two stanzas are anonymous; the familiar third stanza is commonly attributed to John T. McFarland. The hymn is sung to two especially common tunes: MUELLER by James R. Murray in North America and CRADLE SONG by William J. Kirkpatrick in Britain and many other hymnals.
