Jesus Loves Me

Words by Anna Bartlett WarnerMusic by William B. BradburyWritten Tune CHINA

Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me, loves me still,
Though I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throne on high
Comes to watch me where I lie.

Jesus loves me, He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
Then His little child will take
Up to heaven, for His dear sake.

Story Behind the Song

Anna Bartlett Warner wrote the text for the 1860 novel Say and Seal, in which it is sung to comfort a dying child. William B. Bradbury set it to music in 1862 and added the now-famous refrain, publishing it in his Sunday-school song collection The Golden Shower. It became one of the best-known children's hymns in the English-speaking church.
