Jesus Paid It All

Words by Elvina M. HallMusic by John T. GrapeWritten Tune ALL TO CHRIST

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
My lips shall still repeat.

Story Behind the Song

Elvina M. Hall wrote the words in 1865 while seated in the choir loft of Monument Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, reportedly during a long prayer. She gave the poem to her pastor, who connected it with a tune by the church organist, John T. Grape. The hymn was later published and became one of the best-known American gospel hymns on Christ’s atoning work.
