I Need Thee Every Hour

Words by Annie S. Hawks; refrain by Robert LowryMusic by Robert LowryWritten Tune NEED

I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like thine can peace afford.

I need thee, O I need thee;
every hour I need thee;
O bless me now, my Savior,
I come to thee.

I need thee every hour; stay thou near by;
temptations lose their power when thou art nigh.

I need thee every hour, in joy or pain;
come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

I need thee every hour; teach me thy will;
and thy rich promises in me fulfill.

I need thee every hour, most Holy One;
O make me thine indeed, thou blessed Son.

Story Behind the Song

Annie S. Hawks wrote the text in 1872 while reflecting on the constant need for Christ in both ordinary life and times of trouble. Her pastor, Robert Lowry, supplied the refrain and composed the tune, and the hymn was first published in Gospel Hymns No. 1 in 1875. It became one of the most widely used American gospel hymns of the nineteenth century.
