Day 225 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Praise Without Pride

David does not seize the kingdom by his own hand. Though anointed long before, he first inquires of the Lord, and then goes where he is sent. Ignatius says, “David, too, who was at once a prophet and a king, and the root of our Saviour according to the flesh, while yet a youth is anointed by Samuel to be king.” The anointed man still waits, asks, and obeys. This is the path of the servants of God: not haste, not self-exaltation, but patient submission.

That same obedience gives the right sound to praise. Psalm 150 does not call for noise alone, but for the whole man to become an instrument. As Origen says, “The trumpet is the contemplative mind or the mind by which the teaching of the spirit is embraced. The harp is the busy mind that is quickened by the commands of Christ.” Praise, then, is not fulfilled by the mouth while the life remains crooked. The mind must receive the teaching of God, and the hands must be quick to do it.

Ezekiel shows what becomes of greatness that forgets this. The cedar that towered over the nations was cut down. Pharaoh is warned by the ruin of Assyria: height, wealth, and renown do not preserve the proud. God casts down those who delight in their own stature. Therefore let praise be joined to trembling. Let the strong not boast, nor the prosperous trust in abundance, nor the pious glory in sound and ceremony. Better to ask the Lord before acting, to obey Christ in small duties, and to praise with a life made lowly, than to stand tall for a moment and then be brought down to the pit.

“David, too, who was at once a prophet and a king, and the root of our Saviour according to the flesh, while yet a youth is anointed by Samuel to be king.”

For Reflection & Discussion

1

Before your next major decision, will you first stop to pray at a set hour and seek the Lord’s way rather than rushing ahead by habit or ambition?

2

What act of obedience today will make your praise truthful—guarding your tongue, giving alms, reconciling with an enemy, or doing some neglected duty without delay?

3

Where has pride grown in you through position, success, knowledge, or possessions, and what concrete act of humility or confession will you undertake today to cut it down?
