Praise Without Vanity

The fall of Saul, the lament of David, the song of the saints, and the sufferings of Paul teach one thing together: the servant of God must not seek glory from men. Saul grasped after honor and died in ruin. The Amalekite tried to gain favor by making himself useful to power, and perished for it. But David did not rejoice over his enemy’s fall, nor make merchandise of another man’s misery. He mourned. In this he showed the spirit fitting for the Lord’s anointed. As Chrysostom says, "2 Samuel 1:25-26 What then? Did he envy David? Not at all, though he had great reason." If Jonathan did not envy, neither did David exult.

Psalm 149 shows the true assembly: the congregation praising God with a holy gladness, while judgment belongs to the Lord and to those who remain faithful to Him. Clement writes, "Let them praise, it is said, His name in the dance, and let them play to Him on the timbrel and psaltery." Yet this praise is not revelry. It is the praise of a people who know that God casts down the proud and beautifies the meek.

So also Paul refuses false boasting. He speaks of labors, beatings, hunger, dangers, and his care for the churches, not to magnify himself, but to guard the bride of Christ from deceivers. True ministry is costly, chaste, watchful, and ready to be thought foolish for the flock’s sake. Therefore let our mouths be filled with praise, but emptied of vanity; let our hands be ready for mercy, and our hearts free from envy when another is honored. Such worship God receives.

“2 Samuel 1:25-26 What then? Did he envy David? Not at all, though he had great reason.”

— John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Timothy

“Let them praise, it is said, His name in the dance, and let them play to Him on the timbrel and psaltery.”

— Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor (Paedagogus)

For Reflection & Discussion

1

Whose fall, shame, or failure have you been tempted to use for your own advantage, and what concrete act of repentance will you make today instead?

2

What boastful or envious speech must you confess and put away today so that your praise of God is not mixed with vanity?

3

What costly service for Christ’s people—prayer at set times, almsgiving, fasting, or helping someone in distress—will you undertake this week without seeking notice?
