Bible Verses About Total Depravity And Human Sin

Early Christian writers often said that human beings are deeply bent toward sin and need God’s help to change, but they did not all explain that in the same way. Lactantius, Arnobius, Minucius Felix, and Origen all use language about corruption, weakness, and a natural pull toward sin, while Bible passages like Romans 5:12, Romans 7:18, Romans 8:7, Ephesians 2:3, and Romans 3:23 give the main scriptural frame.

At the same time, some writers also stress that people can still choose the good and that not every action is forced by nature, so the witness is strong on human weakness but mixed on a full later doctrine of total depravity. The broad pattern is that early Christians saw sin as real, widespread, and tied to fallen human life, yet they still kept room for repentance, discipline, and divine grace.
