Bible Verses About Theophanies And Appearances Of God

Early Christian writers often taught that God really appeared in ways people could see, usually through the angel of the Lord, visions, or the Son/Word of God. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Novatian, and Victorinus all connect Old Testament appearances like the bush, Hagar, and Jacob to God's own presence or to the divine Word.

The evidence is broad and strong for the idea of real divine appearances, but some writers also stress that God is invisible in his full nature and is seen through forms, signs, or visions. A few passages are only about dreams, angels, or generic appearances, so they are supporting rather than central. Overall, the main early Christian view is that the Old Testament theophanies were true acts of God, not empty symbols.
