Bible Verses About Theological Anthropology

Early Christian writers taught that human beings are made by God, bear his image, and are made of both soul and body. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Theophilus of Antioch, Tatian, Origen, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, and Lactantius all connect human nature to Genesis 1:26 and related passages. Many writers also say the image is tied to the inner person or to the full human being, while the body and soul work together and should not be split apart.

The evidence is broad on creation in God's image and on the soul-body unity of man, but it is mixed on whether the image means the body, the mind, or a moral likeness that grows over time. Some later writers emphasize that likeness is completed in holiness or resurrection, so the exact details are not always the same.
