Bible Verses About The Unforgivable Sin And Blasphemy Against The Spirit

Early Christian writers consistently treated blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as a real, severe sin tied to refusing or twisting the Spirit’s work, not just to saying a rude word. Jesus’ words in Matthew, Mark, and Luke are the base text, and writers like Tatian, Origen, Tertullian, Irenaeus, Cyprian, and the Apostolic Constitutions repeat them plainly. Several also link the sin to falling away after receiving the Spirit or to calling the Spirit’s work evil.

The tradition is broad and fairly consistent, though some writers use the passage in debates against heretics or to warn baptized believers, so those applications are sometimes narrower than the gospel text itself.
