Bible Verses About The Tradition Of The Apostles

Early Christians taught that the apostles passed on a real body of teaching, and the churches were to keep it, guard it, and pass it on. Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Cyprian, Papias, and the author of the Epistle to Diognetus all speak of apostolic tradition as something received from the apostles and preserved in the churches.

The Bible passages most directly tied to this idea are Acts 2:42, Acts 15:23-28, 1 Corinthians 11:2, 2 Thessalonians 2:15, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 2 Timothy 2:2, Jude 1:3, and Ephesians 2:20. The evidence is broad and early, though some writers use tradition mainly to defend church order or fight heresies, so the exact scope of “tradition” can be broader or narrower depending on the author.

The strongest common thread is that apostolic teaching was not treated as private opinion but as a public deposit the churches were to hold fast.
