Bible Verses About The Pope

Early Christian writings give strong support for the bishop’s role in local church order, but they do not give a single clear picture of a universal pope with full control over all churches. Ignatius, Cyprian, and later church orders speak strongly about obeying the bishop, while Irenaeus and Cyprian also connect Rome and Peter to church unity and authority. At the same time, Origen reads Peter’s keys in a wider way, and the Apostolic Constitutions focus on bishops in general, not one supreme bishop over all.

So the early witness is broad on bishops and Rome’s importance, but mixed and indirect on the later papal office.
