Bible Verses About The Poor In Spirit And The Beatitudes

Early Christians taught that the "poor in spirit" were the humble, lowly, and those who did not trust in pride or wealth. Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Archelaus, and Origen all link Matthew 5:3 to inward humility and to the kingdom of heaven, not just to being poor in money. They also read the Beatitudes together, so hunger, mourning, meekness, and mercy fit a life shaped by righteousness and care for the poor.

The evidence is broad and consistent on the spiritual meaning of the Beatitude, though some writers also connect it with real poverty and almsgiving.
