Bible Verses About The Lord's Supper

Early Christian writers taught that the Lord's Supper was a real church meal of bread and the cup, done in remembrance of Jesus' death, and that it was tied to his body and blood. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, the Didache, and the Apostolic Constitutions all give direct witness to this, and they often link the meal to John 6 and the words of Jesus at the Last Supper.

The evidence is broad across the 1st to 3rd centuries, though some writers stress the meal as a sign, memorial, or figure while others speak more strongly of body and blood. The strongest shared thread is that believers used the Eucharist reverently, with baptismal and moral limits, and did not treat it as an ordinary meal.
