Bible Verses About The Laity And The Clergy

Early Christian writings present a clear church order with bishops, presbyters, deacons, and the laity in distinct roles, and they often expect the people to honor and follow the clergy. Ignatius is the earliest strong witness here, repeatedly calling the laity to be subject to deacons and presbyters and placing all under the bishop; Cyprian and the Apostolic Constitutions repeat similar order and discipline.

The Bible passages selected from 1 Corinthians, 1 Timothy, Ephesians, Titus, and 1 Thessalonians also support distinct offices and ordered leadership in the church. The evidence is broad for hierarchy and office, but thinner for a fully fixed “clergy versus laity” system in the earliest layer, and some later texts sound more developed than the New Testament itself.
