Bible Verses About The Intermediate State

Early Christian writers commonly taught that the dead go to an intermediate place before the final resurrection and judgment. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Methodius, and others speak of Hades, Abraham’s bosom, or a temporary resting place for the righteous, while the unrighteous await judgment or punishment.

Some writers also describe this state as conscious and divided between comfort for the righteous and torment for the wicked, especially in comments on Luke 16 and related passages. A few passages are more indirect or are used to argue against heresies, but the broad pattern is clear and repeated across the second and third centuries. The evidence is strongest where writers connect this teaching to Luke 16, Hades, and the waiting for resurrection and final judgment.
