Bible Verses About The Inner Man

Early Christian writers usually treated the inner man as the soul, mind, or inward life that can be renewed by God, while the outer man is the body that wears out. Tertullian, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, Methodius, Archelaus, Cyprian, and others use that language in ways that fit Bible passages like Ephesians 3:16 and 2 Corinthians 4:16.

The evidence is broad for an inward self that can be strengthened, renewed, and judged by God, but it is mixed because some key quotations come from refuting heretics who used “inner man” in strange or one-sided ways. So the early Christian teaching is not a single technical definition, but a clear pattern: the inner man is the unseen part of a person before God, and it is not the same thing as saying only the soul matters and the body does not.
