Bible Verses About The Holy Spirit

Early Christian writings teach that the Holy Spirit is the promised Comforter who teaches, guides, gives understanding, and comes from the Father and the Son. Writers like Ignatius, Irenaeus, Origen, Hippolytus, Tertullian, and Cyprian describe the Spirit as active in prophecy, baptism, forgiveness, and the Church’s life. The evidence is broad and strong across the 2nd and 3rd centuries, though some writers speak more about the Spirit’s work and role than give a full definition of the Spirit’s nature.

A few passages are indirect or liturgical, but together they give a clear picture of early Christian belief in the Holy Spirit as divine, personal, and at work among believers.
