Bible Verses About The Gospels And Apostolic Witness

Early Christian writers taught that the Gospels came from apostolic witness and should be received as a trusted record of Christ. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Caius, and Tatian all connect the four Gospels to apostles, apostolic men, or eyewitness testimony, and they treat that witness as the ground for Christian teaching.

The evidence is broad and consistent on apostolic origin and authority, though some texts are indirect because they speak about witness, tradition, or the apostles more generally rather than naming each Gospel in detail. One point is especially clear: these writers opposed rival gospels and false teachers by appealing to the public, apostolic Gospels already received in the churches.

Bible passages such as Luke 1:2, John 21:24, Acts 1:22, John 15:27, and 2 Peter 1:16 fit this same pattern of eyewitness witness and help explain why early Christians valued the written Gospels.
