Bible Verses About The Gifts Of The Spirit

Early Christian writings teach that the gifts of the Spirit were real, varied, and given by the one Holy Spirit for the church’s good. Writers like Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, Justin Martyr, Novatian, and Gregory Thaumaturgus tied these gifts to 1 Corinthians 12 and Hebrews 2:4, naming prophecy, healing, tongues, wisdom, knowledge, and miracles. They also said the Spirit gives these gifts as He wills, and that believers should use them to build up the church rather than for show.

The evidence is broad and strong across the second and third centuries, though some passages are direct teaching while others simply repeat Pauline lists or apply them to church life. A few liturgical and later church-order texts speak of gifts in worship and ministry, but the core belief is clearest in the biblical passages and the major fathers who quote them.
