Bible Verses About The Flesh And The Spirit

Early Christian writers usually taught that the flesh and the Spirit are in conflict, but they did not treat the flesh as evil by itself. Ignatius, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, Lactantius, Cyprian, and others used Paul and John to say that a person becomes spiritual by living under the Holy Spirit, while the flesh remains weak and can be ruled by sin. They also taught that Christians should put to death fleshly deeds, bear the fruit of the Spirit, and avoid carnal passions.

A smaller set of texts goes further and speaks of the flesh and spirit as parts of the whole human person, while keeping the body itself from being the enemy. The witness is broad and early, but some lines are just short Bible quotations or repeated sayings, so the strongest evidence comes from the longer explanations by Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clement, Origen, and Cyprian.
