Bible Verses About The Abode Of The Dead

Early Christian writers commonly taught that the dead go to Hades or Sheol as a real place of waiting, with the righteous and the unrighteous kept apart until the resurrection and judgment. Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Hippolytus, Tertullian, and later writers like Lactantius and the Apostolic Constitutions all speak this way, often alongside Bible passages such as Psalm 16, Luke 16, 1 Peter 3:18-20, 1 Peter 4:6, and Revelation 20:13.

Many also taught that Christ descended to Hades and that his victory opened the way for the dead and pointed to a future resurrection of the body. The evidence is broad and early, though some details differ, especially on whether Hades is described as one holding place, an intermediate place, or a place with different regions for the righteous and the wicked.
