Bible Verses About Sports And Public Games

Early Christian writers usually warned believers to stay away from public games, theaters, and circus shows, especially because they saw them as tied to idolatry, violence, and moral corruption. Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Lactantius, Minucius Felix, Theophilus of Antioch, and the Apostolic Constitutions all speak against Christian participation or viewing.

The strongest and clearest pattern is opposition, not support, though a few Bible passages use race or contest language as a metaphor for Christian discipline rather than as approval of the games themselves. The evidence is broad across the second and third centuries, but it is mostly about spectacles, theater, circus events, and gladiators rather than modern sports in general.
