Bible Verses About Spiritual Gifts In The Early Church

Early Christian writers taught that spiritual gifts were real gifts from the Holy Spirit and were still active in the Church for teaching, prophecy, healing, tongues, and discernment. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Clement of Alexandria, Novatian, and Gregory Thaumaturgus all connect these gifts to 1 Corinthians 12 and say they were given for the good of the Church. The clearest theme is not self-display but service: gifts were meant to build up believers and help the whole body.

A few later liturgical and church-order texts also speak this way, but the strongest witnesses are the second- and third-century fathers. The evidence is broad and consistent, though some passages only repeat Paul’s wording rather than adding independent detail.
