Bible Verses About Socrates And Greek Philosophy

Early Christian writers did not agree on Greek philosophy, but many of them treated Socrates as a notable if limited thinker. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Hippolytus, and Lactantius all connect Socrates with wisdom, moral inquiry, or a search for truth, while also stressing that philosophy can be incomplete, mixed with error, or unable to give full knowledge.

Some writers praise Socrates for confessing ignorance or for focusing on virtue, but others criticize Greek philosophy as unreliable and warn that Christian truth stands above it. The overall pattern is broad but mixed: Socrates is often respected, yet early Christians do not treat Greek philosophy as final or sufficient.
