Bible Verses About Sin And Repentance

Early Christian writers generally taught that sin must be repented of, confessed, and turned from, and that God gives forgiveness to those who truly repent. Hermas, Clement of Alexandria, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Cyprian, Origen, and the Apostolic Constitutions all connect repentance with forgiveness, baptism, or restored church life.

The evidence is broad and early, but some writers differ on how often a believer can repent after baptism and how severe the sin is, so the teaching is strong on repentance itself and mixed on later church discipline. The Bible passages most often linked with this theme include John the Baptist's baptism of repentance, Jesus calling sinners to repentance, and apostolic calls to repent for the forgiveness of sins.
