Bible Verses About Sexual Relations And Christian Marriage

Early Christian writers taught that marriage was good, sexual relations belonged inside marriage, and adultery and promiscuity were forbidden. Ignatius, Clement of Alexandria, Athenagoras, Tertullian, and Lactantius all speak this way, and the strongest Bible passages here are 1 Corinthians 7 and Hebrews 13:4. The evidence is broad across the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and several writers also say spouses should stay faithful to one another and that marriage should not be treated as shameful.

At the same time, some writers praised abstinence, virginity, or self-control, so the full picture is not pro-sex in a modern sense; it is pro-marriage, pro-faithfulness, and pro-chastity.
