Bible Verses About Scripture And Tradition

Early Christian writers taught that Scripture and apostolic tradition belonged together, not as rivals but as linked guides for the church. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Cyprian, and Novatian all appeal to Scripture while also appealing to apostolic tradition or church teaching as a rule for reading and guarding the faith. At the same time, several writers warn that human traditions can corrupt God’s command, especially when they replace or override Scripture.

The evidence is broad and consistent on the need for both Scripture and apostolic tradition, but it is mixed on how each should be ranked in different disputes and practices.
