Bible Verses About Saul And Kingly Power

Early Christian writers remembered Saul mainly as Israel’s first king and as a warning about envy, disobedience, and unstable rule. Clement of Alexandria, Theophilus, Lactantius, and Cyprian all refer to Saul in the story of Israel’s kings, while Cyprian and Irenaeus use Saul’s chase of David to teach patience and innocent suffering. Some writers also say Saul’s kingship was given by God and later lost because of sin, and a few use Saul when talking about Spirit-given prophecy or the witch of Endor.

The evidence is broad on Saul as a biblical king and a moral example, but thinner on a full early Christian doctrine about kingly power itself beyond the idea that rule must stay under God’s authority.
