Bible Verses About Sabellianism And The Trinity

Early Christian writings strongly reject Sabellianism and teach that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are real distinctions while still confessing one God. Writers like Gregory Thaumaturgus, Hippolytus, Tertullian, Dionysius of Rome, Novatian, and Origen all argue against making the Father and Son the same person, and many link this confession to baptism in the threefold name from Matthew 28:19.

The evidence is broad across the 1st to 3rd centuries and appears in theology, baptism, and liturgy, not just in anti-heresy works. There are some differences in how authors explain the Trinity, but the main line is clear: they did not treat Sabellianism as the church's teaching. Bible passages such as John 1:1, John 10:30, Matthew 3:17, and Matthew 28:19 are often used as key texts in this discussion, while 1 John 5:7 is not a secure early witness for these writers.
