Bible Verses About Righteousness

Early Christian writers taught that righteousness is tied to faith in God and a life that follows his commands, not to empty words alone. Clement of Rome, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Tertullian, Hermas, and Cyprian all connect righteousness with belief, obedience, repentance, mercy, and holy conduct. The clearest and broadest line is that Abraham was counted righteous by faith, while many writers also say the righteous must do righteous works and keep God’s commandments.

The evidence is broad across the 1st to 3rd centuries, though some texts stress faith more and others stress action more, so the emphasis is mixed rather than one-sided. A few Bible passages are direct proof texts for both sides of this theme, especially Romans 4, Romans 1, Galatians 3, and Deuteronomy 6.
