Bible Verses About Politics And The Kingdom Of God

Early Christians usually said Christ’s kingdom was not an earthly political kingdom, but a heavenly reign that believers should seek first. Justin Martyr, Cyprian, Origen, Tertullian, and others used John 18:36, Matthew 6:33, Luke 17:20-21, Philippians 3:20, and Daniel 2:44 to explain that Christians live under God’s rule now while waiting for Christ’s full kingdom later. The evidence is strong for this basic kingdom teaching, but it is mixed on politics:

some writers stress obedience to rulers and prayer for kings, while others focus on the church’s separate heavenly citizenship and nonviolent witness. A few passages are only loose matches to politics language, so the main picture comes from direct kingdom passages rather than from general civic comments.
