Bible Verses About Philosophers And Philosophy

Early Christian writers mostly treated philosophy with caution, and many warned that human wisdom can mislead if it is not under Christ. Origen, Cyprian, Tertullian, and Lactantius all use Colossians 2:8 or 1 Corinthians 1–3 to argue that philosophy can be vain, divided, or even harmful when it competes with the gospel. At the same time, Clement of Alexandria and Justin Martyr could speak more positively about philosophy as something that may help search for truth when it is rightly ordered.

The overall picture is mixed but clear: Christians did not all reject philosophy outright, yet they did reject any philosophy that stood over Scripture or claimed to be wisdom by itself.
