Bible Verses About Papal Authority

Early Christian writings give real support for strong bishop leadership, but they do not give a single, clear picture of papal authority as later defined. Ignatius of Antioch and the Apostolic Constitutions speak in very high terms about bishops, while Cyprian links Peter and the keys to church unity and order. At the same time, other writers such as Origen and Tertullian limit Peter’s words or apply them more broadly, so the tradition is not uniform.

The strongest early pattern is respect for bishops and for church order, with a more mixed and debated witness on Peter’s special authority and how far it extends to Rome.
