Bible Verses About Nuns And The Order Of Virgins

Early Christian writings do support the idea of a recognized order of virgins and women set apart for chastity, prayer, and church service. Ignatius speaks of β€œthe company of virgins,” Hermas gives the virgins a special role in his vision, and Cyprian, Tertullian, and the Apostolic Constitutions all treat virgins and widows as distinct groups in the church. The strongest evidence is about consecrated virginity and disciplined church life, not about later medieval nuns in a fully developed monastery system.

The witness is broad across the 1st through 3rd centuries, but it is mixed in form because some texts speak of spiritual meaning, others of practical church orders, and some only of virginity in general.
