Bible Verses About Menander The Heretic And Gnosticism

Early Christian writers usually describe Menander as a Samaritan magician and heresiarch linked to Simon, not as a true teacher of the church. Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Hippolytus all place him in the stream of false teaching and connect him with Gnostic-like error, magic, and claims about baptism. The strongest and most repeated theme is that Menander misled people by magical power and taught that baptism in his name gave immortality.

The evidence is broad across the 2nd and 3rd centuries, though some passages are only indirect because they discuss related heretics, Simon, or later heresy lists rather than Menander alone.
