Bible Verses About Marcus Aurelius And Christian Persecution

Early Christian writers did not leave a single, clear statement that Marcus Aurelius was a fixed persecutor in every place and time, but they did connect his reign with Christian suffering and imperial pressure. Justin and Athenagoras address him as emperor, while Tertullian later says Marcus Aurelius even protected Christians and blamed a military drought on their prayers.

Other early Christian writings clearly describe persecution under Roman rulers in general, with Christians refusing to sacrifice and suffering for their faith. The strongest evidence here is indirect and mixed: it supports real Christian hardship under Roman power, but it does not give one simple, uniform picture of Marcus Aurelius himself.
