Bible Verses About Lust

Early Christian writers taught that lust was a serious sin that had to be resisted, not excused. Clement of Alexandria, Theophilus of Antioch, Athenagoras, Polycarp, Hermas, and others linked lust to adultery in the heart, sexual sin, and the need for self-control. Several writers also said lust was tied to the flesh and worked against the Spirit, echoing Matthew 5:28, James 1:15, Galatians 5:17, and related passages.

The teaching is broad across the early centuries, though some authors frame lust mainly as inward desire, while others focus on sexual behavior, marriage fidelity, or the battle between flesh and spirit.
