Bible Verses About Idolatry And Images

Early Christian writers consistently taught that idols and man-made images are not gods and should not be worshiped. Writers like Theophilus, Clement of Alexandria, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Arnobius, Cyprian, and Lactantius all reject bowing to carved images and often tie that rejection to the biblical commands against graven images. The evidence is broad across the second and third centuries and is especially strong in apologetic and polemical writings.

Some texts also discuss images as likenesses or as art, so the main teaching is not that every image is wrong, but that treating images as divine is idolatry. A few passages are only indirect, but the core witness against idol worship is clear and repeated.
