Bible Verses About Head Coverings

Early Christian teaching said women should cover their heads in prayer and worship, and men should not cover theirs. Tertullian says plainly that “every woman” should be veiled, while Clement of Alexandria and the Apostolic Constitutions also speak of women praying with covered heads. The Bible passages most directly tied to the issue are 1 Corinthians 11:3-7 and 11:13, which early writers repeatedly use as the main basis for the practice.

The evidence is broad among third-century Latin and Greek writers, though it is strongest for women in prayer and worship, not for every public setting in every later church custom.
