Bible Verses About Godparents And Sponsors

Early Christian writings here give only a thin, indirect picture of godparents and sponsors. Tertullian uses the word "sponsors," and his line shows that baptismal sponsors were known in the early third century, but the rest of the set is mostly about baptism, repentance, church order, and laying on of hands rather than sponsors themselves. A few Bible passages about suretyship, baptism, and spiritual parenting can help explain the background, yet they do not directly describe godparents as a Christian office.

With fewer than two direct early Christian witnesses for this topic, the picture is limited and mostly background.
